The assault was led by the Bideford and Barnstaple contingent, whoarrived on the ground first. Hopton was defeated, and one thousand stand of arms taken. As a consequence of this, our siege was again raised, the Cavaliers being forced to flee with such haste that they left behind them three great guns and some powder. Sir Ralph's head-quarters were at Saltash, of whose powerful women I have before written. We hired a Newcastle ship to batter him at that place, but the master of it failed of his bargain, and meanly betrayed his trust.
